Whenever you are reading the Bible, and a particular verse “jumps” off the page at you (catches your interest), that is Jesus wanting to talk to you about its truth in relation to your life. Ask Him a question about the verse, i.e., “Are You saying . . .?” or “What is it about my heart or Your heart that I need to see in this verse?” etc. Then simply insert the reference of the scripture in the blueletterbible.org search bar. (If you are on your computer click on the little magnifying glass symbol to the right. If you are on the BLB app, just tap on the number of the particular verse.) Up comes various tools:
Click on the tool TSK (Treasury of Scripture Knowledge) and you can cross reference the scripture throughout the Bible. This is important in keeping the meaning of the individual scripture in proper context with the rest of the Bible – any “part” of the Bible must be interpreted in light of the “whole” Bible. Whenever any of the cross references “jump” out at you, cross reference those verses as well! As you continue this process throughout the Bible, you can have an amazing, continuous conversation with God.
Whenever verses “jump” at you be sure to look up the meaning of the pertinent words in the verse using the tool in BLB called “Interlinear/Concordance.” It will give you the Greek/New Testament and Hebrew/Old Testament meaning of every word in the verse. This ability will lead you into the mysteries and secrets of God’s heart, and yours. When I discovered the differences between the rhema “word” (MATT 4:4) and the logos “word” (HEB 4:12) I was wondrously escorted into the very intimate Presence of the Lord – His Presence is His voice.
This conversation journey with Jesus will revolutionize your times alone with Him and result in a much deeper intimacy with HIm. As intimacy deepens, trust and hope will rise to never before attained heights in your life. Then, that promised Peace of God (2 THESS. 3:16) will truly pass all understanding (PHIL 4:7) and you will live in the wonder of the love of your Father.
Don’t forget to always ask questions as you seek to hear God’s voice. Our problem is not that God is not speaking, our biggest problem is that we are not listening. Asking Him questions helps us to become aware of, or sensitive to, His voice when He responds.
